JOB SUMMARY

Applies understanding of business area to conduct Chemical Engineering work. Applies learned Chemical Engineering skills to conduct plant support; resolves problems of moderate and occasionally high complexity on chemical processes. Leads small projects and programs. Mentors and supports others.

This role will be located at the Chatham, VA. facility and will report to the Plant Manager.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Organization and Work Processes (30%)

  • Works effectively within department / site organization and understands responsibilities of each function.  Awareness of manufacturing work processes. 
  • Messaging, procedure writing and written reporting to immediate supervisor and current workgroup.
  • Utilize resources from both inside and outside the site towards achieving goals, adapting ideas from other areas to solve problems.
  • Contribute ideas and approaches to process improvement, working with teams and other duties as assigned.
  • Track needed plant performance data to support continuous improvement, HES requirements, and site decision making.
  • Maintain effective systems that monitor production activities, including sustainability, efficiency, cost, regulatory compliance, and energy.

 

Technical Recognition (30%)

  • Recognized within the site / department to be competent in Chemical Engineering and technology calculations and digital tools.
  • Responsible for maintaining recipes for batch production and working with the recipe industrialization group to update recipes as needed, based on actual or potential problems.
  • Provide applicable training to operations to achieve plant production, quality, or HES goals.

 

HESQ (20%)

  • Support efforts to maintain regulatory compliance and achieve safety goals.
  • Support efforts to close HES activities (such as safety interlock testing) with use of tracking tools.
  • Participates in chemical process PHA and understands basis concepts of site risk analysis procedures.
  • Responsible for developing and implementing solutions to close compliance gaps.
  • Support root cause analysis efforts, eventually leading cause analysis efforts with a variety of methodologies.
  • Ensures workplace safety by participating in safety observations, hazard recognition programs and reporting identified HES concerns.

 

Capital Projects (10%)

  • Participates in chemical process projects as a team member, working towards.
  • Supports manufacturing process capital projects by gathering and providing data.
  • Able to lead small projects with the assistance of plant leadership and more senior engineers.

 

Other (10%)

Networking

  • Network within site and other engineers in the business unit and supporting departments.

 

Intellectual Property and Innovation

  • Respects and secures intellectual property.

 

CSR

  • Aware of and complies with CSR (ESG) programs.
  • Assists in the completion of CSR deliverables for projects and plant support programs.  Contributes to climate change roadmap.

 

Digital Expertise and Application

  • Technically savvy, with college level simulation and IT skills advancing to basic knowledge of historian and digital manufacturing tools.
  • Able to build skills to manage, update, and troubleshoot DCS systems.
  • Application of simulation, process control, historian and basic analytical tools to monitor and improve chemical processes, working towards more advanced digital tools.

 

 

Minimum Qualifications and Education Required

Education and area of focus:

  • Bachelor’s in Chemical Engineering; typically requires a minimum of 0 to 3 years of related experience; or an advanced degree without experience; or equivalent work experience.

 

Certifications / Trainings:            

  • Demonstrated ability to explain complex technical issues to all varieties of audience and leaves a clear understanding of message.
  • Strong computer capabilities.

               

Preferred Trainings / Certifications

  • Six Sigma certification
  • Root Cause analysis and problem-solving experience strongly preferred
  • PHA and LOPA training strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in managing capital projects
  • DCS, programming or batch manager experience
  • OSHA/ EPA experience
  • Leadership experience

 

Competencies – Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (KSAs)    

  • Basic competence advancing to fluent understanding of process chemistry and engineering.  Applies engineering fundamentals and increasing know-how to problem solving and troubleshooting.
  • Gathers and analyses data in support of projects.
  • Complete on the job learning curriculum with documented development plan.
  • Basic use of engineering methods and tools.

 

HES Requirement:

  • Supports the site HES policy and complies with all regulatory and internal requirements.
  • Participates in HES activities provided by site management and Arkema Inc. (e.g., Behavioral Base Safety, SafeStart, etc.).
  • Supports and promotes the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident or injury incidents.

 

Physical Demands / Working Conditions:

  • Work will be a mixture of office work and work in the manufacturing plant.
  • Works with or around hazardous substances.
  • Work will require the use of protective clothing and equipment, which may include, but not be limited to, eye protection, head protection, respiratory protection, and foot protection.
  • Scheduled hours may vary.
  • This position is in Chatham, VA, a PSM site with VPP distinction.
  • Potential for minimal travel.
  • Complies with all regulatory requirements, industry best practices, and internal policies.
  • Available to support continuous plant operations as needed.
