As a Senior R&D Engineer, you will contribute significantly to technology and product development projects by identifying and implementing innovative solutions. Will be responsible to develop, enhance and validate new technology modules according to the most advanced technology available, to satisfy the mission critical power protection product market specification.This role will need to be able to work in-person in our Richmond, VA facility.

Your responsibilities
- Critical member of the Electronics and Hardware chapter, Work within a multidisciplinary team to develop world class mission critical power protection equipment
- Serves as a subject matter expert on projects, providing guidance to team members, acting as a mentor, and sharing lessons learned
- Effectively communicates complex technical solutions and concepts to engineers and non-engineers
- Provides leadership, mentoring, coaching and support to team members
- Performs a variety of complex technology and engineering assignments using advanced and innovative techniques
- Design and simulate electronic subsystems for mission critical power protection applications
- R&D context maintains awareness of state-of-art technology, as well as ABB products and technologies, identifies and understands technical drivers for R&D projects in own area. Understands what creates customer value in own R&D projects and project portfolio of own organization and works to improve operations and increase customer satisfaction according to incoming requests
- Provides consulting services to business operations and customers
- Engineering support of manufacturing and building activities and provides sustaining engineering support for existing products
- Creates customer facing documentation such as user manuals, technical data sheets
Your background
- B.S. in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) required
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in electrical design
- 3 plus years’ experience with engineering design software, such as Altium, AutoCAD, eCAD
- Experience with electrical distribution components such as breakers, contactors, and fuses
- Comprehensive knowledge of ECN’s (Engineering Change Notifications), BOM’s (Bill of Materials), and documentation systems
- Knowledge on transformer magnetic design a plus
- Experience with low voltage power semiconductor selection (IGBTs, MOSFET’s, and Diodes), gate drive and protection a plus
- Knowledge in environmental, reliability, and safety requirements for Commercial or Industrial products a plus
- Solid research experience of getting ideas from concepts to prototypes preferred
- Excellent lab skills and problem-solving ability
- Candidates must already have a work authorization that allows them to work for ABB in United States
